AUGUST, Georgia. - Dustin Johnson has been playing golf for so long it's easy to forget he grew up.

But it happened guys! He is now 37, which in most other major sports means "over the hill". He has children, a future wife, a gray hair or two. And... wisdom? You know. At least when it comes to Augusta National, where Johnson has a doctorate in course management.

asked Harry Higgs.

"I played Sunday afternoon and then Monday morning with Dustin Johnson and kudos to him. 'He's full of knowledge,' Higgs said. He would come over and start talking to me when I looked confused." could almost say it was the same when he was here the first time."

In 2009, when the DJ was just a child, he played his first Masters tournament at Augusta National. In 2022, he will play his twelfth game, a period that includes his victory in November 2020.

Back then, Johnson explored and mastered every inch of the court and, like many experienced players before him, that knowledge began to pay off during the week of the tournament.

"The DJ - on the 16th, when the flag came right in the middle, just over the bunker - he said if you had a high number you had to be aggressive with him," Higgs said. "Only good in the bunker. But if you don't have good numbers, maybe play short and walk away. Basically let it roll up the hill and into the top hole. The putt, which is 35.40 feet, is much lighter at full height and to the left, than if you get aggressive and pull your hair out and ride downhill and you're 35.40 feet over the hole.

When you hear about the importance of knowing lessons for veteran masters like Tiger Woods, you talk about details like this. Knowing where to hunt isn't enough at Augusta National, you also have to know where to get lost.

Johnson learned his lessons the hard way. He scored four top 10s in a row before his breakthrough victory, including a 2nd place finish at the hands of Tiger in 2019. Perhaps the lesson would have been a little easier if Dustin Johnson had been helped by Dustin Johnson himself .

"Things like that take time to learn, right?" it's Higgs. “But, man, there's no secret about it. You must make a good golf swing at sunset. The boys are so good, especially the young ones, I don't think they really pay attention. Glasses. They get lost in what they're trying to do. They believe in their abilities. They are very confident and many children just want to be shown. They want to show themselves and others that they can overcome these difficulties.

Knowing the subject matter is important, but in this case, the source of that knowledge is a surprise. Johnson is under no obligation to share its trade secrets with other competitors. In fact, competitive logic suggests otherwise, which is why Tiger is a closed book.

“You might have to ask Justin Thomas. "There's only one person in this business who listens to Tiger's advice," John Rahm said Tuesday. I asked first and got nothing.

The tiger was no longer the only adult in the room. This is the problem of child players: after a while, they become intelligent.

"I think he might not be very aggressive. He hit the ball on the highway. He hit it on the lawn," Higgs said. "Again, all the cliches work, but to hear that from a man who won that golf tournament and was number one and world class at everything he does, then you better not play very aggressive.”
