'Heartbroken And Troubled': State Leaders React To Uvalde, Texas Elementary School Shooting
Texas leaders on Tuesday prayed for the victims of their thoughts and prayers that killed 14 students and a teacher at Rob Elementary School in Uvalad, Texas. Governor Greg Abbott confirmed at a news conference the day after the gruesome attack that guns were among the dead.
The Republican leader also shared a statement that he and his wife Cecilia feel sorry for the victims of this "senseless crime".
"Texans across the state are mourning the victims of this heinous crime and the Ubalade community," Abbott wrote. "Cecilia and I mourn this great loss and call on all Texans to show our continued support to those who are suffering. We thank Rob Primary School for the initial brave reactions that helped make them safer. ”
Abbott said he instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to investigate the crime to work with local law enforcement. The Texas Emergency Management Division is providing resources to local authorities to respond to the tragedy, Abbott said.
Other Texas lawmakers have said they are praying for the victims, including Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz tweeted, “Heidi and I sincerely pray for the children and families of the gruesome Uvalade shooting. We are in close contact with the local authorities but specific details are still pending.
Local Houston leaders are also facing tragedy, with many declaring they have no gun control laws. Mayor Sylvester was one of those who made the statement: “I am saddened and shocked to hear of the tragic event in which 14 innocent children and a teacher at Texas Rob Elementary were killed and dozens injured today. My sincere condolences to my family. Tell the teachers and classmates who suffered this impossible tragedy. ”
Turner highlighted the recent massive shooting in Buffalo that killed 10 people and urged lawmakers to do more to prevent these tragedies. "Congress needs to function, and governors and state legislatures need to pass legislation to control just weapons," Turner wrote. "This is what the voters have to demand from their representatives. How many children are still being killed by unprovoked firearm violence."
Judge Lina Hidalgo in Harris County tweeted, "In the next few hours we will see the faces of more children being killed by another senseless act of gun violence in Texas. However, we are prepared to jeopardize gun interests." Stand up for the lives of innocent people?
Jean Woo (D-Houston)'s representative from Texas referred to the cycle that became so popular after similar tragedies. "It's over again. We will call for action. They will tell you soon. There will be a team. But nothing will change. It is a whole new normal ongoing violence. "
