JUNE 11 (UPI) - Mo Donegal defeated favorite We The People and winner of the Kentucky Rich Strike derby on Saturday at Belmont Stakes, the final round of the Triple Crown.
We The People had a 2-1 lead at half-time, but Moe Donegal took a 5-2 lead in the last half of the game, winning 2: 28.28.
Nest, a plump female, was second, Skippy Longstocking was third, and we humans went down to fourth.
Moe Donegal's team, piloted by three-time Eclipse Prize winner Irad Ortiz Jr., received the $ 800,000 prize while the eighth field competed for the $ 1.5 million prize pool.
The early vote that won Preakness bets in May did not take place on Saturday on a 1 1/2 mile runway nicknamed "Big Sandy" in Elmont, New York.
Rich Strike, going 7-2 at Belmont Stakes, beat Preakness to finish sixth at Belmont.
Saturday's race concluded the Triple Crown race and marked the fourth consecutive year without a winner after three different horses won in each of the three races.
"MON VIN BELMONT!" Donegal Racing posted on Twitter after the win.
Animal Wellness Action Group CEO Marty Irby released a post-match statement congratulating coach Todd Pletcher "and the entire Moe Donegal team" on their win.
"We appreciate the New York Racing Association's ongoing work to restore the integrity of the sport," he said.
"[We] can't wait for the Competition Integrity and Safety Act to go into effect within a few weeks and look forward to running clean drug tests on all horses tested at the 154th Belmont Race."
