Chelsea Vs. Tottenham Score: Harry Kane Scores In Final Minute As Spurs Earn Draw At Stamford Bridge
It was a bitter and heated battle at Stamford Bridge that saw Chelsea and Tottenham equalize in Sunday's 2-2 draw. Goals from Kalidou Koulibaly and Rhys James were thwarted by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane for Chelsea, with the England striker going home at the last minute. There was some intensity to the game as three players were booked, with Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte booked after Spurs scored in the 68th minute. Tuchel wanted to whistle the ball after a foul on Kai Havertz, but the goal stood because it was a different phase of the game. In terms of intensity, both coaches see red after the game.
Chelsea saw Marc Cuquerella start the game with a first-half assist from Koulibaly, then they controlled the game for 60 minutes and couldn't concede a corner to Spurs during that time. Richarlison's introduction on the debut changed the course of the game, but Raheem Sterling beat James on an open run to put Chelsea 2-1 ahead in the 15th minute when he fell trying to clear. But later, Spurs smacked their manager in the face with a late goal, then three corner kicks from none other than Kane.
The coaches regrouped after the final whistle as receiving red cards was an interesting affair for both. At the end of the game, Tuchel answered questions about the red card.
The clash between London rivals has intensified as Spurs return to the Champions League. Conte couldn't see his side earn their first win at Stamford Bridge but he will have been pleased with the fight they showed at half-time to get a result. Tuchel thought Chelsea had put in a great performance and wasn't happy with Spurs' unchallenged goals but they are stoking the rivalry.
In previous years, Chelsea would have beaten Spurs by a margin that made the decision irrelevant, but in a year where Champions League places can tumble down to the final minute of the season, every point counts. The two will not meet again in the Premier League until February but this should be a much-anticipated game.
Look at the numbersAlthough Chelsea dominated the first half, things were still on paper between the two teams. Chelsea had about 65% possession, but Spurs played well in defence. Chelsea made five of their 16 shots from outside the box as the Spurs defense gave them passes. Chelsea only had three shots on target but managed to find the net with two shots on target. Spurs had five of their 10 shots on target and after failing to take a corner in the first 60 minutes, they managed five before eventually leveling through Kane.
It was a game that showed Spurs can keep up with Chelsea and even struggle when things open up. Richarlison's substitution of Ryan Sessegnon in the 57th minute was a feat by Conte as Spurs not only overplayed Chelsea but kept possession even and scored two goals to Chelsea. The summer's influx of depth allowed Conte to change the game and on Sunday it was the difference between a point and no point.
The Chelsea defense picks up where it left offTuchel's decision to use Rhys James at center-back and Ruben Loftus-Cheek at full-back has paid off in large measure. Son Hyeong-min touched the ball just seven times in 79 minutes before being substituted on for Ivan Perisic. There was a moment of panic after the break as James had to be cautioned for Son's fall before he stopped, but the advantage returned to Chelsea after that.
They even picked up where they left off last season as James made easy finishes and Koulibaly hit defenders.
Quite an opportunity to improve on his Chelsea goalscoring record, but he had four shots and seven rebounds. There will be some concerns if N'Golo Kante is out with a hamstring injury but there was still plenty of energy left for the Blues with the arrival of Conor Gallagher. Everyone knew their role and had to play it to stop Spurs, so Conte had to introduce a fourth forward in Richarlison to wreak havoc. The defense could have been sharper in goal but overall they played pretty well on both sides.
The absence of Chelsea's back nine is still disappointing'Chelsea' had enough chances to win the game but Koulibaly, who leads the team in shot attempts, is worrying. Spurs pursued Raheem Sterling well in midfield as he matched Emerson Royal on his assists, but none of Chelsea's front three could do enough to win the game. Kai Havertz missed a huge shot which James was happy to take moments later but a balanced Chelsea side should create some good chances.
They've been linked with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has worked with Tuchel at Dortmund, and unless they think Armando Brocha can lead the line, it might be worth taking a step ahead of the Champions League. It's clear Chelsea's defense is good enough to get the job done, but attacking still leaves more questions than answers.
