The Associated Press reported on Monday that Transformco, the owner of Kmart and Sears, did not respond to emails asking for comment and did not receive any messages on the company's phone number.

Last days for Kmart and Sears?

Both Sears and Kmart are owned by Sears Holdings, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 and narrowly escaped liquidity in early 2019. They were sold to former investor and CEO Eddie Lampert, who sold them. Limited budget called the company Transformco.

Together, Sears and Kmart have closed more than 3,500 stores over the past 15 years and lost about 250,000 jobs.

The decline of Kmart was slow but steady due to declining sales over the years, changes in shopping habits, and the inevitable shadow of Walmart that happened by chance a few months after Kmart was founded in 1962.
