'Prey' Director Explains How An Easter Egg From 'Predator 2' Found Its Way Into The End Of The New Movie

Director Dan Trachtenberg spoke to Insider about the Predator 2 Easter egg.

He explained how YouTube helped him.

Predator fans rejoice. Hulu's Prey is a valuable addition to the franchise, as this harrowing look at an alien assassin's first journey to Earth features ultra-violent action and a powerful story about one woman's quest to become a leader.

Plus, director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) cleverly incorporated unique references to the Predator franchise, including the origins of the 1990s movie Predator 2.

Set in 1719, Prey follows Naru (Amber Midthunder)'s journey to become a Comanche warrior by slaying an animal in the forest, an unknown killer from another planet.

After Naru helps a white settler who is also hunting a predator, he in return gives him a flintlock pistol. In his final battle with the Predator, the gun is one of the items he uses to fight it.

At the end of the film, Naru returns to his tribe with the Predator's severed head, indicating that the threat has passed. Then the gun is given to the eldest of the tribe. He looked at the engraving on it, which said "Raphael Adolini 1715".

This is a reference to Predator 2.

At the end of this film, which is set in 1997 Los Angeles, Danny Glover's character, LAPD Lt. Harrigan, receives the same gun from a predator.

The idea for the gun originated when Trachtenberg decided to tell the story in the 18th century.

Trachtenberg told Insider that the idea of ​​including the weapon in the film came early in Prey's development.

"The first thing that came to mind was the idea of ​​making a movie with Native Americans and Comanche characters in particular," Trachtenberg said, as he wanted to take The Predator back in time further than the franchise. never did.

"And then the Predator 2 light came on and I was like, 'This is a date, this is where we need to go,'" he continued. "The gun might even have been in the studio when I pre-released."

However, the weapon already had an origin story.

The comic gives the predator a pirate gun.

In July 1996 in Dark Horse Comics' Predator anthology series. 1718", the story follows a Predator fighting alongside a pirate named Rafael Adolini, who gives the Predator his weapons before he dies.

It was also the idea of ​​Predator creators Jim and John Thomas to continue the franchise in the mid-1990s.

Trachtenberg said he was unaware of the idea for the comedy or the sequel when he and screenwriter Patrick Eason were developing The Heist, but the story has been in the air ever since.

"I only discovered it when I was working on the film," he said. "I was hoping so when we got the Predator Bible. It's not really in the studio. There's been no continuity."

This led to problems when finding the gun mount.

Trachtenberg said he didn't know where the Predator 2 gun was, suggesting it was buried in the Fox studio archives, so Prey profiler James Rosenthal was tasked with finding it. Meanwhile, Rosenthal had a big break.

“He went to YouTube and saw a fan video blogger making copies of guns,” Trachtenberg said. "There was a Predator 2 gun on the shelf behind him. So he walked up to these vloggers and said, 'So the gun in the movie is from this guy's rack.

It's like that. A Predator fan built a weapon on the Prey.

Trachtenberg thinks it would be fun to continue the weapon's journey in a Foder sequel.

Now Korsa's sequel needs to figure out how to switch the weapon to the Predator for the Predator 2 scene to make sense. Trachtenberg admits he's not too worried.

"I don't think we painted ourselves into a corner," he said. "One thing shouldn't lead to a sequel, but like this movie, it's interesting to keep talking about it to learn from what was just an idea. Accept that."

Although no sequel has been announced, its prospects look good. The animated credits, created by seven indigenous artists, show the Predator spacecraft returning to Earth for revenge, Trachtenberg said.

And Trachtenberg says he has ideas on how to move forward.

"I've been thinking about this movie since third grade, so there's definitely something interesting waiting for me in this universe," he said. "It would be great to do more."
